During the summer of 1991, Loma Linda University dismissed three faculty members including Dr. Stewart W. Shankel, chair of the Department of Medicine, for conduct that was against the policy of the university. Two other colleagues, Dr. George Grames and Dr. Lysle W. Williams, were implicated when they came to his support. Loma Linda University provides an example of a church-related institution that has come into conflict with the established perceptions of what academic freedom needs to be in an American educational facility. The roots of this conflict can be surmised to be the influence of the religious body that sustains it: a religious organization that seems determined to maintain control of its academic institutions so that it can further its religious mission.
