The term “holiness” is subject to a wide range of meanings. There are few terms that conjure up so many divergent ideas in the minds of those who hear it. Not only is this the case, but even within the compass of the Bible, “holiness” and its cognate term, “sanctification,” have a variety of meanings and applications.
In part, it is in the light of this broad and variegated use of language and the importance of maintaining the integrity of Scripture that this book is proposed. Its purpose is twofold: (1) to assist the working pastor in his week-to-week commitment to faithfully proclaim the biblical Word including the holiness message, and (2) to expose the pervasiveness of this message in the Bible when its holistic implications are exposed. Thus the primary presupposition of this book concerns the importance of biblical preaching, the authority of Scripture, and the necessity for properly interpreting the biblical texts.
