Do too many ecotourists impact the abundance and activity patterns of wildlife?

The impacts of ecotourism on wildlife are seldom studied, and the popularization of ecotourism may have unintended consequences for wildlife. Using camera trap data from a well-used trail in the Savegre Valley of Costa Rica, I compared the relative abundance and activity patterns of humans and wildlife during time periods of 2019 versus 2020, when international tourism was prohibited due to the global Coronavirus pandemic. Human group size and abundance declined in 2020, and relative abundance of domestic dogs increased.

Creating a Protocol for RunAbout to Assigning HSQC Spectra of PDZ-1 Domain of the Protein ZO-1

PDZ domains are found in most signaling proteins for viruses, plants, bacteria, and animals. They help to recruit other proteins to build systems, and localize signaling complexes. Viral proteins have been known to target PDZ domains through PDZ binding domains. In order to identify where and how these viral proteins attach to the PDZ domains on the zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) protein, a ¹5N-¹H HSQC spectrum was taken of PDZ from ZO-1 to map out the amino acids in the protein.

We aim to provide a single, cloud based web tool for plasmid genome annotation to help biologists study characteristics of antibiotic resistant bacteria. With use of the genome analysis tool Prokka, AWS, and RShiny, we are able to provide a web tool for user friendly plasmid genome upload, annotation, and visualization.

Finding Renewable Energy Solutions Through GIS

This project explores Esri's ArcGIS tool and uses its functionality to map out ideal renewable energy locations in specific areas in the United States. Depending on the type of energy source, different factors are considered to draw conclusions about the best places to implement renewable energy power plants. Research into GIS data and renewable energy factors helped guide the search for the datasets that this project required.
